FAQ

Travel loans - the details

Being better informed makes for better decisions. Have a question or two? Check out these helpful FAQs or get in touch with the team.

What can I use a travel loan for?

Pretty much any trip cost - flights, accommodation, tours, cruises, travel insurance, or a honeymoon or big overseas trip. You can put it toward one big expense or spread it across the whole trip. If it's getting you where you want to go, a travel loan can usually help cover it.

How does a travel loan work?

A travel loan is an unsecured personal loan used to cover travel costs, so it isn't tied to any asset. You apply online, and if approved, the funds go into your bank account, often within a day. You then repay it over an agreed term in weekly, fortnightly, or monthly installments, with interest. You'll always see the total cost upfront before you go ahead.

Are travel loans worth it?

That depends on your situation. A travel loan can make sense if it helps you take a meaningful trip and the repayments fit comfortably within your budget. Like any loan, the key is borrowing responsibly - being clear on the total cost, the repayments, and how it fits your plans. With fixed rates and a set repayment schedule, it can be a practical alternative to dipping into savings or leaning on higher-interest credit cards. It's worth weighing up whether the timing and cost are right for you.

How much can I borrow for a travel loan?

It depends on your trip costs, your income, your existing debts, and what you can comfortably afford to repay. Lenders look at your full financial position to work out a suitable amount. Subject to lender criteria and approval.

How long are travel loan terms?

Travel loan terms usually range from one to five years, depending on how much you borrow and how you'd like to structure your repayments. A shorter term means less interest overall, while a longer term lowers the repayments but usually costs more in total.

How is my travel loan interest rate decided?

Your rate is personalised. It's based on things like your credit history, your financial position, and the loan details. You can see the current rate range in the Loan Information section below, and use the calculator to get a feel for repayments (a guide only until we assess your application).

What fees are involved in a travel loan?

Travel loans usually have an establishment fee and an introducer fee. Some lenders also charge ongoing account fees. We'll spell out every fee before you go ahead, so there are no surprises. Full fee details, including a worked example, are in the Loan Information section below and in your loan contract.

Can I get a travel loan with bad credit?

Possibly. A less-than-perfect credit history doesn't automatically rule you out - we work with lenders who understand that past financial issues don't define your future. They look at your income and whether you can comfortably afford the repayments. Rates may be higher and the amount you can borrow may be lower. Keeping up with repayments can also help rebuild your credit over time. Subject to lender criteria and approval.

Can I get a travel loan if I'm self-employed?

Yes - being self-employed doesn't rule you out. Lenders will usually want to see proof of income, like bank statements or financial records, to understand what you can comfortably repay. We'll let you know what's needed.

Can I get a travel loan while receiving WINZ support?

It may be possible, but it depends on the lender's criteria and your overall financial situation. Lenders look at your total income, your expenses, and whether you can comfortably afford the repayments. If your main income is a benefit, you may need to provide extra documentation, or apply through a lender that considers applicants on government support. We can help you explore what's available for your situation. Subject to lender criteria and approval.

How quickly can I get the money?

It varies, but with all your information in, approval can be same-day. Once you're approved and everything's signed, funds are often available the same or next day, depending on the lender. Approval is subject to meeting lending criteria, and an affordability test applies.

Will applying for a travel loan affect my credit score?

When you start an application, we run a soft credit check to size up your options - and a soft check doesn't affect your credit score. It's only if you go ahead with a lender, and they run a full credit check, that it's recorded on your credit file and may affect your score. Applying with several providers can mean several checks.

Can I pay off my travel loan early?

Yes, in most cases you can make early or lump-sum repayments, which can reduce the total interest you pay. Some lenders charge an early repayment fee, so it's worth checking your loan contract before you go ahead.

What happens if I can't make a repayment?

Get in touch with your lender as soon as you can - the earlier the better. Missing a repayment may mean fees and could affect your credit score, so keeping the lines open is the most important thing. Lenders can often work something out if they know early.
