Secured or Unsecured?

You’ve got two options when it comes to personal loans: secured and unsecured. A secured loan uses something you own as security, like a car, which can help you get a better rate. An unsecured loan doesn’t need any assets behind it, so it’s a bit more flexible but might come with a higher interest rate. The right option just depends on your situation.

FAQ

Personal loans - the details

What can I use a personal loan for?

Loads of things. A personal loan can help with travel, a wedding, study, home improvements, or bringing several debts into one repayment. If it's a personal goal that needs a bit of funding, a personal loan can usually help.

How much can I borrow?

It depends on your income, your expenses, and what you can comfortably afford to repay. We look at your full situation and match you with a lender whose limits suit you. Subject to lender criteria and approval.

How is my personal loan interest rate decided?

Your rate is personalised. It's based on things like your credit history, the loan details, and whether the loan is secured. Rates aren't one-size-fits-all, so yours reflects your situation. You can see the current rate range in the Loan Information section below.

What fees are involved in a personal loan?

Personal loans usually have an establishment fee and an introducer fee. Some lenders also charge ongoing account fees or a PPSR fee. We'll spell out every fee before you go ahead, so there are no surprises. Full fee details are in the Loan Information section below and in your loan contract.

How long are loan terms?

Personal loan terms typically range from one to five years, depending on the lender and what suits your budget. A longer term means smaller repayments, but more interest over the life of the loan.

How quickly can I get the money?

It varies, but with all your information in, approval can be same-day. Once you're approved and everything's signed, funds are often available the same or next day, depending on the lender. Approval is subject to meeting lending criteria, and an affordability test applies.

What's the difference between a secured and unsecured personal loan?

A secured loan uses something you own, like a car, as security. That can help you get a better rate and borrow a bit more. An unsecured loan doesn't need an asset behind it, so it's more flexible, but the rate can be higher. The right choice comes down to your situation.

Will applying for a personal loan affect my credit score?

Exploring your options with us doesn't affect your credit score. It's only when you decide to go ahead with a lender, and a full credit check is done, that it's recorded on your credit file.

What credit score do I need for a personal loan?

There's no set number. Generally, the stronger your credit, the more options you'll have. If your credit is on the lower side, a secured loan - where you offer an asset like a car as security - can be a better fit. Either way, we look at your whole financial picture, not just a score.

Can I pay off my loan early?

Yes, in most cases you can make early or lump-sum repayments. Some lenders charge an early repayment fee, so it's worth checking your loan contract before you go ahead.

What happens if I can't make a repayment?

Get in touch with your lender as soon as you can - the earlier the better. Missing a repayment may mean fees and could affect your credit score, so keeping the lines open is the most important thing. Lenders can often work something out if they know early.

Can I get a personal loan if I'm self-employed?

Yes - being self-employed doesn't rule you out. Lenders will usually want to see proof of income, like bank statements or financial records, to understand what you can comfortably repay. We'll let you know what's needed.

Can I get a personal loan anywhere in NZ?

Yes. We help people right across New Zealand. It's all handled online and over the phone, so you don't need to be near a branch - though we do have offices in Auckland and Christchurch.

Is better finance™ a licensed and regulated business?

Yes. One Partner Ltd (FSP403346), trading as better finance™, holds a Class 2 Financial Advice Provider Licence issued by the Financial Markets Authority. So you're dealing with a licensed, regulated business.
