What types of boats can I finance?

We can finance a wide range of boats and jet skis - runabouts, launches, yachts, fishing boats and more, whether new or used. Whether you're buying from a dealer or a private seller, there's likely a loan option to suit. If it's within the lender's guidelines, there's a good chance we can help.

How much can I borrow for a boat loan?

It depends on the boat or watercraft you're buying, your income, your existing debts, and what you can comfortably afford to repay. Boat loans typically range from $3,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on your financial profile and the type of vessel. A deposit or a trade-in may increase how much you can borrow, or help you get a better rate. Subject to lender criteria and approval.

How is my boat loan interest rate decided?

Your rate is personalised. It's based on things like your credit history, the loan details, and the security on the loan - if the boat is used as security, that can mean a lower rate. You can see the current rate range in the Loan Information section below, and use the calculator to get a feel for repayments (a guide only until we assess your application).

What fees are involved in a boat loan

Boat loans usually have an establishment fee and an introducer fee. Some lenders also charge a PPSR fee or ongoing account fees. We'll spell out every fee before you go ahead, so there are no surprises. Full fee details, including a worked example, are in the Loan Information section below and in your loan contract.

How long can I finance a boat or jet ski for?

It depends on the watercraft. Boat loans typically range from three to seven years, and up to ten for larger or higher-value vessels. Jet ski loans are usually one to five years, since they tend to cost less. A shorter term means less interest overall, while a longer term lowers the repayments but usually costs more in total interest.

What's the oldest boat I can finance

Most lenders prefer boats under 15 years old, especially for secured loans. Some will consider older vessels, particularly if they've been well looked after or hold their value well. For older boats, an unsecured loan can sometimes be an option. We'll let you know what's possible for the one you're looking at.

How quickly can I get the money?

It varies, but with all your information in, approval can be same-day. Once you're approved and everything's signed, funds are often available the same or next day, depending on the lender. Approval is subject to meeting lending criteria, and an affordability test applies.

Do I need a deposit for a boat loan?

Not always. Some lenders will finance up to 100% of the boat's value, so no-deposit lending can be an option. A deposit isn't required, but putting one down can reduce how much you borrow and may help you get a better rate. Subject to lender criteria and approval.

Can I get a boat loan with bad credit?

Possibly. A less-than-perfect credit history doesn't automatically rule you out - we work with lenders who understand that past financial issues don't define your future. They look at your income and whether you can comfortably afford the repayments. Rates may be higher and the amount you can borrow may be lower. Keeping up with repayments can also help rebuild your credit over time. Subject to lender criteria and approval.

Can I finance a used or second-hand boat?

Yes. Lenders on our panel consider new and used boats, whether you're buying from a dealer or privately. If you're buying privately, it pays to check the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) first, to confirm there's no money owing on the boat or trailer. We'll help you work through what's needed. Subject to eligibility and lender criteria.

Will applying for a boat loan affect my credit score?

When you start an application, we run a soft credit check to size up your options - and a soft check doesn't affect your credit score. It's only if you go ahead with a lender, and they run a full credit check, that it's recorded on your credit file and may affect your score. Applying with several providers can mean several checks.

Can I pay off my boat loan early?

Yes, in most cases you can make early or lump-sum repayments, which can reduce the total interest you pay. Some lenders charge an early repayment fee, so it's worth checking your loan contract before you go ahead.

What happens if I can't make a repayment?

Get in touch with your lender as soon as you can - the earlier the better. Missing a repayment may mean fees and could affect your credit score, so keeping the lines open is the most important thing. Lenders can often work something out if they know early.

Is a boat loan secured or unsecured?

It can be either. With a secured loan, the lender registers a security interest over your boat (recorded on the PPSR), which can mean a lower rate. An unsecured loan doesn't use the boat as security, so the rate is usually higher. Which one suits you comes down to your situation - we'll talk you through it.

Can I refinance an existing boat loan?

Yes. If your circumstances have changed, refinancing could help - for example, adjusting your repayments or reviewing your rate. It's worth being clear on what you want to achieve first, as refinancing can extend your loan term and savings aren't guaranteed. We can talk through whether it makes sense for you. Subject to approval and responsible lending checks.

Can I get a boat loan if I'm self-employed?

Yes - being self-employed doesn't rule you out. Lenders will usually want to see proof of income, like bank statements or financial records, to understand what you can comfortably repay. We'll let you know what's needed.
